The Future In India With Electric Cars

With India set to embrace electric technology for passenger vehicles by 2030(as per Government’s plan) car makers are evaluating options to electrify some of their models. From India’s leading car giant, Maruti Suzuki India to M&M, which is the only auto maker in domestic market to offer electric vehicles, all are gearing up for the transformation. As the industry readies to take a technological leap, we bring you a list of upcoming electric cars in India that will be launched in future.

1.Hyundai Kona Electric

Hyundai is likely to launch electric version of its small SUV Kona, sometime next year. The electric SUV was recently revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show earlier in September and is also likely to be displayed at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show early next year. With the small electric SUV, Hyundai is aiming to achieve an impressive range of 384km. While the model is already available in international markets with 28kWh battery. In terms of looks, the electric SUV, based on Hyundai’s evolved fluidic design tenet features cascading front grille, two-tier LED headlamps, LED DRLs, muscular fenders and black plastic cladding. Set for a grand debut in the coming months, the upcoming electric car in India is likely to be launched by the end of next year.

2. Nissan Leaf

Nissan Leaf is one of the several upcoming electric cars in India that are likely to be launched in the coming months. Nissan revealed the new-generation Leaf hatchback in Japan in September followed by its public display at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. Taking a leap into the second generation, the hatchback has received aerodynamic design changes and a bunch of new tech. That said, the new Leaf is the first autonomous electric model (production car) from Nissan with the ProPILOT Park semi-autonomous technology. Besides, the electric hatchback now comes with improved battery life and electric range. At the heart of the hatchback is a 40kWh battery that is claimed to offer 400km range in one complete charge. The charging time for the battery varies between 8 to 16 hours and it also comes with a quick charging feature that provides 80% battery life in 40 mins.

Expected Launch – Sometime next year

3. Tata Tiago Electric

Tata Motors is working on the electric version of its stellar entry level B segment hatchback, Tiago which is currently available in petrol and diesel variants in manual and AMT option. Developed by company’s UK based arm, Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TETC), the Tiago electric concept was recently unveiled at the Low Carbon Emission Vehicles Show in Millbrook, UK. The battery electric variant of Tiago features a liquid-cooled 85kW drive motor with claimed torque of 200Nm. In addition, it sports a front-wheel-drive supported by a six-speed gearbox. Knowing that Tiago is a popular car in its segment, it is one of the most highly anticipated upcoming electric cars in India.

Expected Price – Rs 8 lakh to 10 lakh
Expected Launch – End of 2018

4. Tata Nano EV

The electric variant of world’s cheapest car, Nano was recently spotted testing near Coimbatore, reinforcing the launch of electric Nano. In terms of looks, the spied model seems similar as the regular petrol version. The rear windshield featured the ‘4BNEV-A08’ sticker which implies the spotted test mule was a zero emissions Nano EV. While there are no concrete details on the mechanicals, but reports in media suggest that Nano electric could get an electric motor along with lithium batteries. The company had first showcased the concept at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show which was claimed to deliver a range of 1160km. Unlike other upcoming electric cars in India, this one is likely to be aimed at commercial or Taxi segment in India.

5. Tesla Model 3

Much has been talked about Tesla making inroads into the Indian market in the recent past and while rumours haven’t stopped humming, it seems the popular EV brand may come to India. However, there is yet no clarity on the same, but if it starts operations in the domestic market, the company could plan to bring its affordable Model 3 electric sedan to India. While the model is already available for sale in the US market, it will soon be launched in other overseas markets including Brazil, New Zealand, South Korea, South Africa, Singapore and Ireland. Powered by the 60kw hour lithium-ion battery pack and supported by RWD as well as AWD systems, the sedan gets Tesla’s Autopilot feature as standard.

Expected Price – Rs 35 lakh
Expected Launch – Second half of 2018

6. Mahindra XUV Aero EV

Mahindra had displayed its much talked about XUV Aero concept at display at the 2016 Auto Expo last year. It has been learnt that the company is contemplating launching the electric XUV Aero for the Indian market. If launched, the model will feature a powerful 380V system that is being developed by Mahindra for its larger vehicles including SUVs, MPVs and performance vehicles. As for the styling, the concept version sported swooping roofline and suicide doors that gave it a contemporary look. Also, the displayed model featured Mahindra’s mHawk diesel unit used in some its popular models.

Expected Price – Rs 30 lakh
Expected launch – Sometime in 2019-2020

7. BMW i5

BMW i5 is the German carmaker’s answer to Tesla’s much hyped Model 3 which is also likely to be launched in India. Unveiled recently at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, i5 will be BMW’s first all-electric sedan. In fact, it is one of the 12 upcoming electric cars from BMW set for launch by 2025. The model is said to sprint from 0 to 100km/h in just 4 seconds while attaining a top speed of 200km/h. In addition, BMW i5 is claimed to offer an impressive range of 600km. Displayed as concept, changes are likely to be underway as for styling is concerned before it hits production.

8. Jaguar i-Pace

Jaguar recently previewed its i-Pace electric concept at the IAA 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. It is expected that Jaguar will start the production of the electric crossover sometime in 2018. In the international markets, the model will compete with the likes of Model X, Mercedes EQ5 electric SUV and upcoming Audi Q6. The concept featured two 150 Kw electric motors on both the axles that are connected to a 90Kw/h lithium ion battery that produces around 400bhp of power and 700Nm of torque. Jaguar claims that i-Pace electric can return an impressive range of 354km. As for its India launch, things are a bit hazy, though Jaguar could bring the model in next few years as India plans to go all electric.

9. Mahindra KUV100 Electric

Mahindra had launched the updated version of the KUV100 in the Indian car market during festive season 2017. Interestingly, the electric division of the company is working on the electric KUV100 that has been confirmed by the company’s CEO, Mahesh Babu at the Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi. What’s more interesting is that the KUV100 Electric will offer an impressive range of 350km on full charge. Moreover, the SUV is claimed to have a top speed of 186kmph and 0-100kmph acceleration in 9 seconds. The electric KUV100 is likely to be unveiled at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo, while the launch could take place in late 2018.

10. Mahindra SsangYong Tivoli Electric

At the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo, Mahindra had showcased the petrol-powered Tivoli compact SUV. Instead of original model, the homegrown automaker has started working on the Tivoli’s platform based compact SUV – codenamed S201 – for the Indian market. Interestingly, Mahindra Electric division is also working on the electrified SsangYong Tivoli which will also go on sale in India. The Tivoli Electric will make its global debut in early 2019. The SUV will offer a rage of 250km on full charge. It will accelerate to 100kmph from standstill in 11 seconds before hitting a top speed of 250kmph.

Expected Price – Rs 18 lakh – 25 lakh
Launch Date – 2019

11. Tata Tigor Electric

The homegrown automaker has recently rolled out the first batch of the Tata Tigor electric vehicle from its Sanand plant in Gujarat. Tata will provide Tigor electric to state-run EESL (Energy Services Ltd.), and is priced at Rs 10.16 lakh (exclusive of GST). By including GST, the price increases to Rs 11.2 lakh. The company will also offer 3-year warranty with the electric sedan. It is powered by a 29.98kW (39.95 hp) electric motor. It will directly rival the Mahindra eVerito.

12. Hyundai Ioniq

Next in the list of upcoming electric cars in India is the Hyundai Ioniq. It was earlier scheduled to feature hybrid powertrain; however, Hyundai has now decided to introduce the electric version of the car in India. It will also be Hyundai’s first electric car in the country and will make its debut at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. Built on Hyundai’s zero-emission platform, the Ioniq electric sedan is propelled by 28kWh lithium-ion polymer battery that churns out 118bhp of power and 295Nm of torque. This electric sedan has a range of 200km on full charge. It also gets fast charging and regenerative charging.

Launch Date – End of 2018
Expected Price – Rs 20 lakh to 25 lakh
